Lipoprotein Particle Size

Lipoprotein Particle Size – LPP Test

What are lipoprotein particles?

Most people know that too much LDL (low-density lipoprotein) is bad for you, but it is not just the amount of LDL, but the rather the density and size of the lipoprotein particles, that can affect you. Yes, size matters. When it comes to lipoproteins, the smaller the particles, the more likely they are to cause serious cardiac problems such as heart attack and stroke. And it’s not just the small LDL lipoproteins that can cause problems; small HDL lipoproteins are also bad. That’s why Dr. Bereliani uses the latest diagnostic tests, such as the Lipoprotein Particle Profile™, also known as an LPP test, as an important component of his practice’s preventive cardiology approach.

Why does lipoprotein particle size matter so much?

A large lipoprotein particle can easily transport cholesterol through the body (out of the blood vessels), whereas smaller particles are more likely to get stuck on arterial walls, carrying cholesterol with them and thus leading to atherosclerosis.

How is the LPP™ test performed?

The LPP™ test requires a simple blood draw, which is performed in Dr. Bereliani’s Beverly Hills office; the blood sample is sent to a lab for analysis. Often, performing an LP (a) test along with your LPP can provide more complete and helpful information. Dr. Bereliani will then go over the test results with you.

What causes small lipoprotein particles?

Genetics are primarily responsible; the tendency toward small lipoprotein particle size tends to run in families, so the best way to minimize your risk of atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease is by reducing harmful lipids in your diet altogether. Lower total levels of cholesterol, LDL, and triglycerides pose much less of a risk, no matter what their size.

But what I am supposed to do about harmful lipids?

Diet and exercise. People who eat diets low in cholesterol and fat have lower levels of these harmful lipids, as do people who lead an active lifestyle.

Why is knowing your lipoprotein particle size an important component of preventive cardiology?

In his extensive experience as a Los Angeles cardiologist, Dr. Bereliani has seen many patients who have come to him as a result of a recent heart attack; these patients were shocked because their LDL total cholesterol levels were in the normal range. When he conducted Lipoprotein Particle Profile™ tests on them, they frequently showed a preponderance of small lipoproteins. If the same patients had come to Dr. Bereliani earlier – before they had symptoms – and had diagnostic tests such as those to measure lipoprotein particle size and Lp (a) – maybe their heart attack could have been prevented! This is why Dr. Bereliani is continually dedicated to preaching the virtues of his preventive cardiology approach.
