Coronary Artery Disease

Coronary Artery Disease

The most common type of heart disease is coronary artery disease (CAD). The vast majority of CAD cases stem from a diet high in cholesterol and fat. Cholesterol and other lipids form plaques that build up on the inside walls of the arteries, causing them to narrow and harden, a process known as atherosclerosis. These arteries are your heart muscle’s oxygen suppliers. Just like any oxygen-starved muscle, the heart weakens. This may result in severe symptoms such as chest pain (angina). It could even contribute to arrhythmias or lead to heart failure or heart attack. Recent modern improvements have made the need for bypass surgery much less frequent. If you are diagnosed with coronary artery disease, Dr. Bereliani can help alleviate it with a number of medical therapies, as well as angioplasty or coronary stents.
